Tips care & Frequently asked questions

  • If you want to have a perfect lawn, you need healthy soil. You cannot achieve and maintain healthy soil without mulching the lawn at least once a year, for all the years you care for that lawn. Once a lousy soil is improved you can mulch once a year in the fall. In the beginning you might want to consider mulching in the fall with leaves and mulching in the spring with Canadian sphagnum peat moss, at least for two or three years.

  • All lawns should be fertilized in the fall. Additional late winter or early spring fertilization may be necessary if fall applications were missed. Fertilization at this time will be influenced by desired level of turf appearance, turfgrass species, soil type, irrigation intensity, and fertilizer carrier. Late spring fertilizer applications may be desirable and even necessary depending on the condition of the turf. When an application is required, do so about mid to late May, after the spring growth surge is over.

  • Aerate the highest traffic parts of your lawn most frequently. Heavy foot traffic can make soil practically impermeable, and lawn aeration can go a long way to solving high-traffic-area problems like slow growth and low resistance to wear and tear. Lawn aeration can make particularly weak lawns vulnerable to weeds, though, so consider applying an herbicide at the same time you aerate.

  • Water your lawn heavily, up to an inch, the day before you plan on aerating. The soil should be soft and moist when aerating but not muddy.
